Health and Safety

Sustainability Spectrum logo Marshalls is fully committed to maintaining the highest health and safety standards at all times and aims to eliminate or minimise the risks posed by people, plant or processes. Throughout the Group, stringent health and safety practices are in operation.

Employee Training

The Group invests in significant employee training in health and safety practices and awareness, with over 90% of employees having received health and safety training in the last three years and all trained employees undertaking health and safety refresher training every three years.

At factory level, health and safety is promoted by Safety, Health and Incident Prevention (SHIP) Teams. Specific training, such as in manual handling or handling hazardous substances, is carried out at all sites.

Positive Safety Programme

In 2005 we launched a ‘Positive Safety Programme’, in response to the HSE’s research which concluded that only 10% of workplace accidents are caused by unsafe conditions, whilst 90% result from unsafe acts.

By focusing on behavioural safety, positively promoting safe ways of working whilst identifying and correcting unsafe practices in a non-judgmental way, we aim to continue our many years of success in reducing workplace accidents.

Health & Safety – OHSAS 18001

At the end of 2005 the Group had secured accreditation to OHSAS 18001 for locations representing over 55% of all employees. Remaining locations are seeking accreditation during 2006 and 2007.
