Many suppliers importing Indian natural sandstone are not engaged in auditing how their stone is produced. However, Marshalls understands that regulation and auditing are essential to ensure international governance and ethical trading with developing countries.
In India, Marshalls only buys sandstone from Stone Shippers India, which in addition to adopting the ETI base code, is certified not to source any raw materials from quarries employing child labour. Marshalls will continue to undertake regular auditing to ensure that the highest standards are maintained at all times.
The audits that Marshalls has undertaken, using these independent experts, have clearly shown that:
(i) There is no evidence of child labour in use in the supply chain
(ii) Our supply chain produces the best possible working conditions within the quarrying environment, together with provisions for both safety and hygiene
(iii) Our supply chain provides regular employment, fair rates of pay and reasonable hours of working
(iv) Our suppliers carry out a controlled quality audit at all stages of production.
Marshalls only works with reputable and reliable suppliers that meet its own stringent requirements and those within the industry. With the help of Marshalls, Stone Shippers India recently achieved the internationally recognised integrated management system that Marshalls has in the UK, incorporating ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.
